About Carrie
View Carrie's Story in Flash
Carrie was born August 22, 1979. She was a healthy,
active child and young adult. In
July
2002, at the age of twenty-two Carrie was diagnosed with Ewing's
Sarcoma. Ewing's Sarcoma is a pediatric cancer, with 50% of patients
being between 10 and 20 years.
During the short time Carrie was with us, she devoted her life to helping others.
She donated her hair to Locks of Love, volunteered at a domestic
violence shelter, a local soup kitchen, Safe House, and participated
in alternative spring break Carrie loved swimming, reading, traveling,
spending time with family and friends.
In
December 2000, Carrie graduated from the University of Michigan
where she majored in Organizational Studies with a minor in Spanish.
After graduation she moved to Tempe, Arizona where her career as
a bi-lingual domestic violence caseworker started. She helped battered
women find respect for themselves and help them start a new life.
In February 2002, Carrie experienced discomfort in her right scapula. It took five months for Carrie's disease to be accurately diagnosed. Her initial diagnosis in May 2002 was bursitis. Pain medication was ineffective and tests in July 2002, that included a MRI, revealed a mass of four inches on her right scapula. A biopsy concluded that she had Ewing's Sarcoma. Carrie moved back home to Michigan and started treatment at the University of Michigan Cancer Center.
Throughout her treatment Carrie maintained a positive, hopeful, and cheerful attitude. She received twenty cycles of chemotherapy, fifty-six radiation treatments, physical therapy, and two surgeries. Even with the side effects of the chemotherapy over an extended period of time, Carrie continued her fight with grace. On June 26, 2004 Carrie passed away. We will forever be grateful to have had her touch our lives. She will be in our hearts and minds inspiring us to be our best. As a foundation we continue Carrie's path of helping others in need. From Carrie's mom, Janet Sloan I want to thank you for visiting our website.
